Lora range

What is the realistic range of LoRa? What is the actual range that can be achieved? The stated range is more than 10 km, between 15 to 20 km. We would say typically 10 km. However, there are other factors that will influence this "realistic range" - such as, the network and node-gateway positioning, surrounding environment presence of physical obstaclesantenna performance, Tx power mode, etc.

Additional remarks: Our team has done an actual trial indoor, and we were able to transmit as far as 7km without any issue.

Hi, has there been any range tests on the rfm units inLoRa modulation and a comparative test on the rfm69h w.

Many thanks. Yep, thanks for the insight, lets then clarify in a Use Case scenario to avoid the obvious. Data Rate: 1. All I am asking is have there been range tests and under what conditions and what data rates and what frequency were the tests done at, not an unfair question, I do want to buy the product but need to know something about the unit capabilities vs the radio manufacturers suggested capabilities to see if it suits my requirement.

It'll be better at MHz than MHz. For non-line-of-sight NLOSyou'll have to determine this experimentally as the blocking material-types vary widely.

Embedded Wireless: Low-Power Wide-Area Network

I have some LoRa radios but no time now to make measurements. You can go to or if you dare. Receiver sensitivity spec. More bits in packet, more chance of bit error. This effectively improves the required received signal strength OR allows larger packets, if the margin is low.

Using lower antenna height still LOS, yields less fade margin. The Fresnel zone losses are because RF power "spreads" in space as distances increases. Visualize two antennas, your view is broadside. The Fresnel zone is a football shaped "cloud" of RF power.

The Fresnel zone at the half-way point of the path, on flat terrain, touches the earth. The longer the path, leaving antenna height the same, the more occluded the "football" shape is - and that RF power is lost to absorption by the earth. Also, the fatness of the shape changes with frequency; smaller better at, say, 2. But at the higher freq.

And then. A 10dBi gain at MHz is a large antenna, say, a 6 ft. This sum of gains and losses is called a link budget. One uses a link budget with a certain fade margin according to how LOS the link is, path length, and frequency, and tolerable packet error rate.LoRa, essentially, is a clever way to get very good receiver sensitivity and low bit error rate BER from inexpensive chips.

That means low-data rate applications can get much longer range using LoRa rather than using other comparably priced radio technologies. LoRaWAN, however, is rarely used for industrial private network applications. In a large network, any given transmission is typically heard by multiple receivers; the server then tells one gateway to respond and the others to ignore the transmission. This process helps avoid downlink and uplink collisions, because a single gateway is transmitting, and the gateways that are overlapping can simply listen for other transmissions.

There are plenty of companies out there using LoRa chips for other protocols; all you have to do is seek them out. From a technical standpoint, LoRa is a unique and awesome modulation format. This video is the best LoRa intro I have found. Caveat: It is very technical. Here can read the core LoRa patent.

A bargain! This is how high sensitivity is achieved. See Figure 1. This is really the power of LoRa—that an inexpensive chip with a cheap crystal can achieve very high sensitivity.

As you might imagine, there is no selectivity between a preamble from one LoRa transmitter vs. If there is a constant chirp at the right frequency and at the right chirp rate, a LoRa demodulator will listen to it, whether its from the intended system or not. Managing a LoRa receiver system to be agile in the face of regular power interference and LoRa interference is very important, and is a key part of Symphony Link. See Figure 2. This function is supported by the SX chip from Semtech.

All Link Labs gateway systems have the ability to decode many simultaneous LoRa chirps simultaneously, which allows very large networks to be built.Connected devices have so far mostly run piggyback on the same networks and protocols that support the Internet and mobile communications — cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. But embedded sensors and other distributed Internet of Things devices have different network requirements than those of computers, phones or tablets.

When humans use the Internet we access data irregularly and in large chunks like websites or streaming videos. Remote sensors and smart machines, on the other hand often only need to send small packets of data at regular intervals, and need to connect in areas away from the traditional infrastructure and a convenient power supply.

Several technologies are starting to address the unique network needs of this class of IoT devices. How do they work?

Each standard uses a different technique to maximize range while minimizing transmission power. Sigfox uses a well-known modulation technique, but transmits slowly in a very narrow band of spectrum to maximize signal penetration.

LoRa radios use a modulation technique that can find signal well below the noise floor. Ingenu uses their own novel form of spread spectrum modulation. So now you can buy a radio chip for a few bucks and add it to any device. Daniel Conrad. At those frequencies, signals penetrate obstacles and travel long distances while drawing relatively little power -- ideal for many IoT devices, which are often constrained by battery life. Within the sub-GHz spectrum, LoRa chips use a spread-spectrum strategy to transmit at a variety of frequencies and data rates.

That allows the gateway to adapt to changing conditions and optimize the way it exchanges data with each device. Semtech produces transceiver chips for devices to be connected nodesand gateways to connect them.

A single gateway can communicate with several hudred thousand nodes up to 20 miles away in unobstructed environments, and even in a city can penetrate buildings to achieve a range of several miles. End-nodes can remain operational for a supposed 10 years running on two AAA batteries drawing 10mA for the receiver, under nA in sleep mode.

That would be great because with proper RC hobby antennas and being much higher over ground than the car used in this test, I could probably get multiple times that range in actual aerial use.

Your post is useful to me anyway. The deal is that it is just another license-free spectrum standard but with a fancy modulation that gives it a better link budget than dumb G FSK for example: better range or smaller antenna or lower power. It is also standarized on the MAC-level, which means that LoRa gateways should receive data from any kind of device, but higher layers are not standarized MAC also handles confirmation.

You can receive the packets and get them over Ethernet or MQTT, but you have to figure out what to do with the payload later on. It does not solve multiple access, so if you have a couple hundred devices operating in the sam area they will be swamping the spectrum for each other, but nicely rejecting narrowband FSK and non-LoRa interference. In my opinion it scales as well as all low-power ISM modules ie. Very cool.

We also have some ground based LoRa devices in Africa that have no trouble transmitting over 10 — 15 KM. We tend to stick to spreading factor 10 and below, to save power.
